This is an 8 week course being held at Salcombe Art Club and will cover the following topics:

Weeks 1 – 4:

  • Intro to materials

  • Preparing a canvas [and other surfaces]

  • Brush handling and using palette knives

  • Coloured layers

  • Colour mixing [including colour bias and the key to successful colour mixing]

  • Glazing techniques

  • Tonal value and compositional elements.

Weeks 5 – 8:

  • Creating a colour palette to give a wide range of possibilities, harmony and balance

  • Creating texture [introducing gels and pastes that create texture and body]

  • Using alternative tools

  • Developing colour mixing

  • Mixed media techniques [using a variety of media, collage and tools]

  • Bringing it together, combining watery washes, thick impasto, textural mediums and mixed media techniques according to individual style and choice.
