Limited & Open Editions
I get asked all the time what is the difference between an Open and Limited Edition print so I thought I would include some info here on the topic and explain why the latter are usually more expensive.
LIMITED EDITIONS
Due to the fact that these are produced in limited numbers they are, in theory, more highly sought after and printed using archival inks and papers they are guaranteed to last a lifetime. All my signed limited edition prints are Giclee on 308gsm museum quality fine art paper, with colours and textures that faithfully represent the original painting.
Limited prints are hand signed and numbered by me to verify that I am satisfied with their quality. Once an edition has sold it cannot be printed again, hence their collectable status. A signed Certificate of Authenticity that outlines the edition size, number of the print in the edition, title and date also accompanies every print.
OPEN EDITION PRINTS
Open edition prints can be reproduced limitlessly in any number of variations therefore they are priced lower than a limited edition print. Because of this, they may offer more affordability for some people and are a great way to get art onto walls
My open editions use the same Giclee printing process as limited editions except that the paper is a 220gsm art paper. Unlike limited editions they are not numbered but are hand signed but don’t include a Certificate of Authenticity.
MAKING THE CHOICE...
Both my limited and open editions are produced by the same UK master printmaker. There is no ‘right’ choice when deciding between open and limited edition prints. The main consideration is to choose the option that best suits a home, budget and preference. Either way, these quality prints offer a perfect way to start or add to your art collection.
